Discovery Bay Shellfish Closure Due to PSP Toxin

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

Discovery Bay is closed to recreational shellfish harvesting due to high levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxin, according to the Washington Department of Health. The closure affects all molluscan shellfish including clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops, making all of Jefferson County closed for such harvesting.

Jefferson County Public Health has placed "Danger – Toxic Shellfish" signs at public access points. PSP can cause tingling lips and tongue, difficulty breathing, and paralysis, with symptoms appearing within minutes. The biotoxin, from marine plankton Alexandrium, remains even after cooking or freezing.

For safe harvesting information, residents are directed to check www.doh.wa.gov/ShellfishSafety.htm or call the Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632. The closure does not affect shrimp, crab, or commercially available shellfish.
