Project SAFER Launches for I/DD Emergency Response

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

Clallam County has launched Project SAFER, a new initiative to improve emergency responses for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The program allows families to complete a response form detailing communication preferences, approach strategies, and other needs. First responders will access this information through a HIPAA-compliant database.

The form can be submitted online, by mail, or in person at Clallam County Health & Human Services at 111 E 3rd Street in Port Angeles. Gary Fraser, Assistant Director of Special Services for OESD114, called the project a 'homecoming event' that brought community members together. Jen Mackey, a Sequim High School special education teacher, praised the collaboration with the sheriff's office and the creation of the response form as 'a brilliant idea.'

Bringing a community together to this magnitude was amazing. Giving the community a chance to interact with the county stake holders, county providers and first responders lend great learning moments for all of us.
